Ingredients

Bread Batter:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup buttermilk

Cinnamon Swirl:

  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Topping:

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg.

  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract.

  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk, starting and ending with dry. Mix until just combined.

  6. In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter to create the cinnamon swirl.

  7. Pour half the batter into the loaf pan. Drizzle with half the swirl mixture and use a knife to create swirls.

  8. Repeat with remaining batter and swirl mixture. Swirl again to marble the top layer.

  9. Sprinkle the top with 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar.

  10. Bake for 55–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  11. Cool in pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For extra donut flavor, brush the top with melted butter and sprinkle cinnamon sugar after baking.

  • This bread freezes well—wrap tightly in plastic and freeze up to 2 months.

  • Best served slightly warm with a pat of butter or drizzle of glaze.
